Duke University Report on Sustainable Financing for the Development and Maintenance of EBM Tools

Summary

Resource Description

The Duke University Marine Geospatial Ecology Lab recently released a report entitled, A Study on Sustainable Financing for the Development and Maintenance of Ecosystem Based Management Tools. The study investigated the factors affecting the financial sustainability of coastal-marine EBM tools through interviews with twenty‐four tool developers. The report presents background information on how commercial software is funded and developed and why that financial model might not be available to EBM software tool developers. It also describes the results of the tool developer interview, their perspective on financial sustainability, and the advantages and disadvantages of several key funding mechanisms and makes recommendations for how both developers and funders can improve the long term sustainability of EBM and conservation tools.
